averley Station, Edinburgh.
A clansman in full regalia pipes you aboard The Royal Scotsman. Edwardian elegance on the rails. World's most exclusive train. Mahogany, overstuffed sofas and chairs, five days of all the rare Scotch (or anything else you care to drink) with no tiresome chits to initial... and one of the best restaurants in Britain, moving or stationary.
Forbes magazine calls it "a rolling palace of pleasure" with "a matchless combination of comfort and scenery."
Well, yes. But there's the Scottish capital of Edinburgh and the countryside, too. Meet Scots along the way.      Begin with a few days in Edinburgh, whose castle is the crown jewel of the Scottish crown (and, indeed, the Scottish crown jewels are kept within). Walk the Royal Mile and get a history lesson en route.
Then board The Royal Scotsman and head for the hills - the Highlands, that is. Strathisla is the home of Chivas Regal, Tain the turf of Glenmorangie. Does it make your mouth water? Plockton is an 18th-century confection of a village, stone cottages and all. Drop by the local art galleries or board a boat for some seal-watching off the Isle of Skye.
A visit to Ballindalloch Castle (owned by the same family for 450-odd years) and to Glamis Castle, childhood home of the Queen Mother. In the Highland Wildlife Park, keep an eye out for the local animal population, some endangered.
If you don't deserve this sort of thing, who does?

Looking for a wee bit more of Scotland? We urge you to spend a few days after your Royal Scotsman journey in the lovely Scottish Borders country. Begin in Edinburgh, where you’ve just landed after your time on the rails. Travel east along the coastal route past an assortment of famous gold courses - Aberlady, Luffness, Gullane & Muirfield. (Please let us know if golf is a passion of yours). Pay a visit to Glenkinchie Distillery for a guided tour and tasting of the “water of life”, then settle into your hotel, the Cringletie House.
Into the Borders territory-Hawick (famous for its cashmere), to learn about the textile industry. Kelso, on the River Tweed, famous for salmon fishing. Behold Floors Castle, home of the Duke of Roxburghe. A tour of the fine art collection here is de rigueur. Walk the lovely gardens, too.
Step inside Sir Walter Scott’s home in Abbotsford, then head for the old town of Melrose. The Cistercian Abbey here was founded in 1136. Among other treasures here is the heart of Robert the Bruce, placed in the 14th century.
In Traquair House, meet Catherine Maxwell-Stuart, daughter of the Laird of Traquair. She gives us a private tour of the historic house.
Back home, you may well be the first among your friends familiar with the Scottish Borders. Trendsetter.
The Scottish Borders. 4 Days.
