n 2003, Patricia
Schultz published 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, her take
on the corners of the globe you simply shouldn't miss in this short
life.
Nice idea, if you've got infinite travel time coming. For the rest
of us with an immense hunger to see and do and discover, R. Crusoe
& Son has compiled a short list —
and a beautifully practical way to accomplish the mission.
Join
us for 23 days of rich exploration to our list of the most
legendary places on earth. And if you've already visited any of these
locations, we provide alternatives; see italicized possibilities
below.
From Fort Lauderdale, Florida, take flight (by private jet, of course)
to Peru —
specifically Machu Picchu and Cusco. Get familiar with Inca culture
and its architectural and religious mysteries. (Head-scratching allowed.)
Alternatives? Trujillo and Chan Chan (the world's largest adobe
city) to see the remains of the Moche and Chimu peoples..
And speaking of mysteries, Easter Island is the capital of the unknown. After centuries of postulation, scientists still can't formulate a reason behind the immense moai that dot the landscape. Alternatives? While you're here, go horseback riding, hiking, or explore archaeological sites with an expert.
Robert Louis Stevenson came before us to Samoa. His intention was to catch up on his reading and relaxation for a bit of time in Polynesia, but he fell in love with the place and spent the rest of his life here. See why.
Across the International Date Line, we arrive at Australia's Great
Barrier Reef. The size and scope of this natural wonder floors us.
More fins, coral, and flash than Times Square on a Saturday night.
Alternatives? Visit Daintree River for a nature excursion, or
take a Dreamtime walk with an Aboriginal guide through the Botanical
Ark. Something more relaxing? Consider beach time or a golf game at
the resort.
Religion has driven man time and again. Take Angkor, Cambodia, for
example, seat of the Khmer Empire and destination of Hindu and Buddhist
pilgrims. Or Lhasa, Tibet, the Himalayan hub of Buddhism. Alternatives?
If you've already seen Angkor Wat, head for Preah Khan to see ongoing
restoration work. Or peruse the local markets for a taste of daily
life. Or visit the Citadel of Women, Banteay Srei, or Cambodia's capital,
Phnom Penh. If Tibet is old hat, take two days in Xian, China, for
a look at the life-sized terracotta warriors unearthed there. Also
see the Ming Wall, Big Goose Pagoda, and the Shaanxi Provincial Museum.
Another option: Relax at our Chengdu hotel and see the giant panda
preserve.
India's Taj Mahal speaks volumes about a man's love for his deceased
wife. Words cannot compare. Alternatively, journey to ancient
Fatehpur Sikri, Mughal capital; visit Itmad ud Duatah's tomb on the
Yamuna River; or head to Sikander to see the magnificent tomb of Akbar.
To the Dark Continent. Tanzania's Serengeti Plain boasts the world's
wildest menagerie. Think wildebeests, zebras, elephants, and the big
cats that stalk them in search of a meal. And that's just for a start.
Choose either Tarangire National Park or Serengeti national Park as
your base. Spend time in Ngorongoro Crater, zoological and botanical
microcosm —and the largest unbroken caldera on the planet.
Egypt calls. Luxor, the Great Pyramids, and the Sphinx await.
Already been to Egypt? Instead, opt for time in Petra, Jordan, lost
coty of the Nabataeans.
Then over the Sahara to Fez, Morocco's most interesting and lively
city. Learn about the Merinid Dynasty and wander the ancient medina,
a spectacular time machine and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Back to Four Lauderdale and home, where there'll be time to sort it
all out.
