You won't find giant tortoises in Borneo. And you won't see elephants in the Peruvian Amazon. Or orangutans snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. In short, to see a good deal of the world's most incredible wildlife, takes a trip around the world.

Good idea.

Enter your private jet, the most efficient way to see the world's wildlife since Noah built his Ark.

From Fort Lauderdale, our odyssey unfolds. Come circumnavigate the globe, visiting 10 unusual destinations.

First stop, Peru. Venture deep into the Amazon with a bilingual, local-born guide. Seek green sloths, monkeys, caimans, and a multitude of birds. Take a boat ride on the Amazon.

In the Galápagos, we board a luxury cruise ship for a few days of island hopping. You'll be astounded (as was Darwin) by the unique cast of animal characters that populates this far-flung archipelago. For their part, the animals are entirely unastounded by us. Basking marine iguanas won't even lift an indolent eyelid at our approach. A stunning lesson in humility, to be sure.

On Easter Island, mystery is a part of life. While much has been learned about the immense moai on this isolated spot of land in the Pacific, much more remains obscured (including an as-yet undeciphered language).

Apia, Samoa provides us with a close look at pure Polynesian culture. The hospitality here is legendary.

Australia, next, specifically, the Great Barrier Reef. Largest coral deposit on earth and home to 1,300 types of fish. Lots of traffic the finned kind just below the ocean's surface. Remember to breathe.

Papua New Guinea? Time warp. Thick jungles and jagged mountains have kept many of the tribes here isolated from 21st-century life as well as from one another. There are two options: take a boat down the Sepik River to visit villages and artisans along the way; or head for the Highlands to visit Huli Wigmen and take part in a traditional sing-sing.

On to Borneo. Visit an orangutan rehabilitation center and hobnob with some of its gentle residents. Then scan the forests for proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles, birds, and the rest of Borneo's unusual menagerie.

Next, head south to Madagascar, that enormous island off the coast of southeast Africa. Isolation for 165 million years or so has resulted in some spectacular biodiversity, making Madagascar one of the ecologically richest countries on the planet. Lemurs. Chameleons. Carnivorous plants. Come see for yourself.

Once we've touched down in the Serengeti, Tanzania, you may well find that you can't sit still. The bush calls. Fine, since our expert naturalists have plenty to show us as we head out on safari in the grandest style. Caution, gridlock ahead: two million wildebeests and zebras en route to fresh grazing land.

On our final chapter of the journey, call on Madeira. This diminutive Portuguese island's gentle climate and cloistered charm won the hearts of Vasco de Gama, Christopher Columbus, and Charles Darwin. Not a bad place for a gala farewell dinner.

On the final leg of our journey, return to Fort Lauderdale.

Circumnavigation complete.
