T orocco is about color. In her great monochromatic cities, every building carries the local theme. Vibrant blue in Fez. Delicate pink in Marrakech. Bright white in Rabat.

It's about Paul Bowles and the fast life for Europeans and about the stripy shadows made by the reed mats atop the medina.

It’s about b’stilla and tagines and their flavors spun from cinnamon and preserved lemons. It’s about the Majorelle Gardens’ impeccably elegant mix of French and Arab. It’s about people wearing djellabas and hiding their finery underneath, so that we can hardly tell the grandees from the peasants.

R. Crusoe & Son offers two exceptional journeys to this sensual country—our 10-day Morocco. As Time Went By tour, and our 12-day Kasbahs, Berbers, & Ergs. Morocco Beyond the City Limits.

On our 10-day As Time Went By tour, our first stop is Casablanca, entryway to the nation. The city is modern, Atlantic, and deeply influenced by the French. Very present and a good jump-off point.

Rabat is a short drive away. Here we get to know the national heroes and other important players on the Morocco stage. The archaeological museum speaks volumes about the nation’s long past (and about Morocco’s pride of place).

Meknes is one of four historical capitals. Here stands Ismail's palace, built in the 17th century (from looted marble) to house his hundred wives. In Volubilis, discover why Antony and Cleopatra's daughter chose this as her home. Then Moulay Idriss, founded by a relative of the Prophet Mohammed.

Make haste to Fez, the most complete medieval Islamic city in the world. Absolutely intoxicating, particularly the medina. Get cozy in the incomparable Palais Jamai (and dream such dreams). Tour old and new Fez, from her souks to her most exquisite tilework..

Next, wend our way through the Atlas Mountains, stopping at the village of Beni Mallal to examine the Berber way of life. Local crafts and the arts flourish.

Churchill went to Marrakech to take the cure (bronchitis). We follow in his footsteps, significantly healthier, we hope. The ancient Berber capital is a busy marketplace, and no wonder—it straddles a number of well-worn trade routes. Life revolves around Djemaa el Fna, the central square with the ambience of a three-ring circus, snake charmers and all. Tombs, mosques, and museums take up our time, when we’re not entranced with people-watching on these busy and colorful streets.

Take a day-trip beyond the city limits to the Ourika Valley for a look at Berber life as it once was—and continues to be. Change comes but slowly to the Atlas range.

Sudden realization: Morocco has captured your heart. Don’t be surprised.

On our 12-day journey, Kasbahs, Berbers, & Ergs, our itinerary follow the same as above from Casablanca to Fez. From Fez, we meet the Berbers of a small settlement, Midelt. Then head into the desert in a four-wheel-drive vehicle for a taste of quite a different lifestyle. Ride camels among the dunes in Mergouza to catch a magnificent sunset, then get cozy in a deluxe tented camp.

The Dades Valley, next, an elongated dip between the Atlas range and the Jebel Sarhro Mountains. Some call it the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. See why in and around Ouarzazate.

Another kasbah awaits, this one in Ait Benhaddou. From here, we follow the picturesque Tizi n Tichka Pass to Marrakech. As in the other Crusoe journey, there is time to explore the city inside and out. Then take a day-trip to the coast, once a heavily besieged region. Destination: Essaouira, settled by the Phoenicians, developed by the Romans, and grabbed by the Portuguese.

From Marrakech, it’s homeward bound for you. Pity, isn’t it?
