The Mediterranean coast in France and Italy has a sensibility all its own. Think sensuality. Think bright sun and sharp shadows. Rich colors that inspired some of the greatest painters, Chagall and Matisse among them. Vincent van Gogh was particularly taken with the yellows and oranges he saw in the South of France, and they found a prominent place on many of his canvases. Who knows what inspiration you might find?
We tour the region aboard two extraordinary windjammers—the Sea Cloud and her sister ship, the Sea Cloud II.
What makes sailing aboard these ships so special? In a word, tradition. Though they are equipped with modern nautical technology, these windjammers are sailed by hand. Crew members work round the clock, following the captains’ orders in response to Mother Nature’s constantly shifting wind and water. Sails are hoisted, halyards set. The crew discreetly adjusts the magnificent sails overhead to catch ocean breezes just so.
Come join R. Crusoe aboard these classic and luxurious sailing vessels.
The Western Mediterranean. 6 Cruises Aboard the Sea Cloud & the Sea Cloud II. 8 Days.

Romance is in the air... in the cafes... on the beach... in the charming towns and cities. Welcome to the French Riviera (the Côte d'Azur) and its Italian counterpart, the Riviera Ligure. The names may differ, but the aesthetic is the same: vividly colorful, wholly sensual, full of esprit de corps. One comes here to live life directly from the heart and soul, and under a golden sun. Others have come before us: van Gogh, Chagall, Isadora Duncan, Modigliani...
We take in the most spectacular sites in France, on mainland Italy and in Sicily, and in Spain. We sail in two extraordinary windjammers, the vintage Sea Cloud, built for Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1931, or her younger sister ship, the Sea Cloud II. Her 360 feet boast 32 gorgeous and ever-so-posh staterooms, each a masterpiece of interior design. A crew of 60 attends to 64 passengers (you do the math).
In the 1990s, the owners of Sea Cloud Cruises had a vision: to build a ship as excellent as the original, historic Sea Cloud. The new ship would be a true windjammer outfitted with commensurate luxury. Nothing less would do. And she would also be a square rigger to give the best possible sailing experience.
In 2001, the 384-foot Sea Cloud II was christened. She has lived up to the dreams of her creators, with all the features of her sister ship including onboard water sports equipment. Her 94 passengers are cared for by a crew of 58.
