Local Flavor

In the shadow of Mount Fansipan, Southeast Asia’s tallest peak, a handful of diverse ethnic minorities live in quiet settlements here and there among the terraced slopes and neon-green valleys of northeast Vietnam. Come meet the Jarai, the Dzao, the Hmong, and other tribes that have kept tradition alive and the modern world at bay. Welcome to the Highlands of northern Vietnam.

Vietnam Highlands: Rice Fields

This is a seven-day sample itinerary. Remember that R. Crusoe can create a Vietnam Highlands itinerary of any length to meet your exact specifications.

R. Crusoe offers this very unusual guided mini-journey into Vietnam’s off-the-beaten-path Highlands as an extension to our Dream of Indochine journey, though it is also a wonderful stand-alone tour, and it can be added to any of our other tours in Asia, including our other Indochina mini-journeys: Bangkok, Laos, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and/or aboard the luxurious Eastern & Oriental Express train through Thailand and Malaysia and into Singapore.

From your Asian gateway city of choice, head for Hanoi, Vietnam. Delve a bit into this historically important city on a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter. Then we’re off. Board the Victoria Express Train bound for Lao Chai. Snuggle into your sleeper car for the overnight ride.

Vietnam Highlands: Sapa GirlsLao Chai is on the Song River near the China border. We come to experience the Tonkinese Alps. Get comfortable in your hotel, then go on a guided tour in Sapa, founded in 1922 by the French. The town is known for its busy and authentic markets, where Hmong and Dzao come to barter their wares.

Into Dao villages, next, where the men are skilled metal and wood workers, and the women excellent embroiderers. Pause for a picnic by the riverside. The views are something else.

Catch the overnight train back to Hanoi, where we have more time to explore the city streets. And our five-star hotel is excellent. Choices abound. Have a taste for the exotic? Just let us know what most interests you.

Please note: On this journey, R. Crusoe & Son travelers share the Victoria Express with other, non-Crusoe travelers.
