Few Americans have had the opportunity to explore Russia’s heartland along the Volga waterways. But as
New Republic correspondent Ernest Poole reported during his visit there in 1917, “All the real things in Russia are done in the villages.” The debut of the 109-passenger
Volga Dream makes this part of the country accessible in a most comfortable way. This is a journey you simply mustn’t miss.
What Makes This Journey Best?
- Cruise on the best boat to ply the Volga waterways.
- Be one of the few Americans to visit Russia’s heartland.
- Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites in Moscow, Kizhi, Yaroslavl, Gortizy, and St. Petersburg.
- Easy-to-add R. Crusoe extensions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Ukraine.
On the Volga Through Russia's Heartland. Aboard the Volga Dream. 12 Days.
Ready for an international vacation you'll remember for a lifetime?
Join us on a quite extraordinary and unusual cruise through Russia, from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Aboard the 109-passenger Volga Dream, ply the Volga waterway in search of Russia's soul. We search out the essence of the nation every step of the way as we explore Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the small towns and villages that connect the two.
We offer two touring program choices aboard the Volga Dream: the Gold Package and the Platinum Package. Travelers who choose the Platinum Package stay at upgraded hgotels in Moscow and St. Petersburg and do some additional sightseeing in groups of no more than 12 travelers. The choice is yours.
Among the delights in store for us: Take in UNESCO World Heritage sites in Moscow, Kizhi, Yaroslavl, Goritzy, and St. Petersburg.
After poking around in Moscow—including guided tours through the Kremlin and its Armory, Tretyakov Gallery of Russian art, Red Square and its incredible landmarks—we embark our ship, the Volga Dream. (Please note that R. Crusoe travelers share the ship with other non-Crusoe passengers.
In Uglich, one of several Golden Ring towns of the Upper Volga region, we hear the story of the settlement and step inside the 17th-century Church of St. Dimitri of the Blood. As you can imagine, the explanation behind its name is intriguing. So is the Church of the Transfiguaration, now part of the unique Uglich Museum of History and Art.
Prince Yaroslav founded Yaroslavl in A.D. 1010. A thousand years later, this UNESCO World Heritage site stands as a remarkable and authentic example of early monastic architecture. Spassky Monastery wows us. So does the Church of Elijah the Prophet and its frescoes. Experience a farmers' market, while we're here.
Cruise White Lake to Goritzy, home to the Kirill-Belozersky and Ferapontov monasteries. Once again, back stories about monks, czars, and pretenders to the throne speak volumes about Russia's colorful past.
Cruise Lake Onega to Kizhi, a UNESCO site known for its incredible collection of traditional wooden architecture—all built without a single nail.
Stop in the village of Mandrogi, also known for its wooden buildings, then we're off for a guided tour of St. Petersburg, a living museum and absolute evidence of Czar Peter the Great's drive to create a Russian metropolis to rival the greatest cities of Europe.
After disembarking the Volga Dream, we explore the top sites around the city as well as Peterhof, Peter the Great's answer to Versaille and another UNESCO World Heritage site. We also visit Catherine Palace in Pushkin, a favorite summer retreat for the imperial family.
