Local Flavor

Waverley Station, Edinburgh.
A clansman in full regalia pipes you aboard The Royal Scotsman. Edwardian elegance on the rails. World's most exclusive train. Mahogany, overstuffed sofas and chairs, all the rare Scotch (or anything else you care to drink) with no tiresome chits to initial... and one of the best restaurants in Britain, moving or stationary. Forbes magazine calls it "a rolling palace of pleasure" with "a matchless combination of comfort and scenery."

Aboard The Royal Scotsman. Travel the Way It Used to Be.

Royal Scotsman trainOn a holiday through the Scottish Highlands, travel the most beautiful rail routes you can imagine. Surround yourself in Edwardian elegance and luxury aboard The Royal Scotsman.

Begin with a few days in Edinburgh, whose castle is the crown jewel of the Scottish crown (and, indeed, the Scottish crown jewels are kept within). Walk the Royal Mile, and get a history lesson en route.

Then board The Royal Scotsman and head for the hills—the Highlands, that is—on one of several journeys. The number of nights you spend aboard The Royal Scotsman varies. The "Classic Scotland" journey features four nights on the train;  the "Grand North Western Highlands," seven nights; the "Grand West Highlands," five nights;  the "Western Highlands," three nights; and the "Highland Fling," two nights. All journeys, regardless of length, begin and end in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Depending on the tour you choose, traverse the Firth of Forth and the Kingdom of Fife (say that three times fast). Enjoy an unusual ceilidh (a traditional Scottish party) while we're stabled overnight. Take a special tour of Glen Ord Distillery, and sample the scotch made there.

Scotland: Isle of SkyeThe route to Kyle of Lochalsh is arguably the most scenic around. It leads to Plockton, where there are choices: a boat out to see seals near the Isle of Skye; a stroll through the authentic village, with timer in an art gallery or two; a woodland walk with marvelous views of the lake.

There's more. Beauly Firth. Carrbridge, where we take a guided tour of Ballindalloch, one of Scotland’s most romantic castles. If you’d like, play a round of golf on the estate’s private course.

In Boat of Garten, Rothiemurchus is our base for another round of activities off the train. Fish. Try your hand at clay pigeon-shooting. Or relax fireside in the estate lodge, a real beauty.

Royal Scotsman cabinDunkeld leads to Scone Palace, home of the earls of Mansfield. Its history stretches back 1,500 years, to a time when Scone was capital of the Pictish Kingdom.

Back in Edinburgh, head home, or talk to us about seeing more of picturesque Scotland, including a bit of golf, if you please, on a custom guided tour.

Please note: On this journey, R. Crusoe & Son partners with Orient-Express, and Crusoe travelers share The Royal Scotsman train with other, non-Crusoe travelers.
