Local Flavor
Ancient Burma. Care to be enchanted by 2,500 years of quite remarkable history? Once Southeast Asia's most secretive sister, shy Myanmar (you might know her as Burma) has dropped her veil to give us a peek at her cultural beauty and richness. This country goes beyond unspoiled—she is graceful, intoxicating, serene, "quite unlike any land you know." Even a century after Kipling wrote those words, they still resonate. Join us on the road to Mandalay.
Burma & The Road to Mandalay. 9 Days.
A year or so after a devastating cyclone left its mark on Myanmar, the repairs and renovations are finished. The Burmese are asking that we come back to tour their gorgeous country. R. Crusoe's journey indulges the senses as much as it does the spirit of discovery.
Begin in Yangon, capital of Myanmar, for a close-up of authentic pagodas and other exotic wonders. Home-away-from-home is the most excellent Governor's Residence hotel, a top hotel and a teak beauty. Visit Kalaywa Tawya Monastery to witness the morning meal ceremony, an experience you won't soon forget.
Fly to Inle Lake, next, to investigate life on the water. Visit a crafts village, learn about floating farms, the Intha leg rowers, the region's holiest sites. Meet a local family in their private home.
Then to Mandalay, where we board our elegant, five-star river cruiser—newly renovated, sparkling, ready for the likes of us. Peruse the city, taking in the most significant sites. Then, aboard Road To Mandalay, we cruise the Irrawaddy River to the ancient capital of Sagaing. Take in the Plain of Pagodas in Bagan, one of Asia's top sites. Consider an early-morning hot-air balloon trip over
the plain to catch the most extraordinary vantage point. Follow up with a chance to experience daily life in Bagan.
Then head home, your head swarming. Leaving Myanmar is the hardest part...
As you are in this part of the world, we suggest you consider R. Crusoe's journey to Indochina before or after Burma. We also offer an alternative Myanmar tour, Old Burma. Sacred Shrines. Villagers & Artisans. And the River of Lost Footsteps. 10 Days.
