Local Flavor
Morocco, land of minarets and marketplaces, snake charmers and street musicians. Where slaves became kings, rivalries built cities, and ancient cultures mingled in the timeless traditions of crafts, music, and faith. The country is a marvelous mix of mountains and desert, open ranges and cities crammed with life. Adventure awaits.
From the moment you step off the plane, this mysterious land seduces the soul and the senses. If you've seen Morocco in the movies, prepare yourself; it is much more than the barren deserts in "Lawrence of Arabia." Morocco is a shopper's delight- spices, fabrics, silver, and brass line the market streets. The scents of fresh orange juice, lemony
tagine, and cool mint fill the air. Exquisitely tiled ancient buildings stand beside monuments to kings long dead and gods fervently worshiped.
Morocco. As Time Went By. A Journey in Three Parts.
This is a 10-day sample itinerary. Remember that R. Crusoe can create a Morocco journey of any length to meet your exact specifications.
In North Africa, Morocco is about color. In her great monochromatic cities, every building carries the local theme. Vibrant blue in Fez. Delicate pink in Marrakech. Bright white in Rabat.
R. Crusoe & Son offers a customized tour of this sensual country, our Morocco. As Time Went By journey. But we also suggest two extensions to flesh out the main tour: our One Imperial City, One Incredible Port. Rabat & Casablanca, and our Morocco by the Sea. Old Essaouira.
On the main tour, our first stop is Fez, the most complete and authentic medieval Islamic city in the world. Absolutely intoxicating, particularly the medina. Get cozy in the incomparable, five-star-plus Palais Jamai (and dream such dreams). Tour old and new Fez, from her souks to her exquisite and unique tilework.
We take time in both old and new Fez before a day trip to Volubilis and its Roman ruins, and Meknes, a 17th-century royal city built by a sultan to rival the
court of Louis XIV of France.
Next, we make our way to Marrakech. There are two possible ways to get there: drive through the Atlas Mountains, stopping at the village of Beni Mellal to examine the Berber way of life on the Tadla Plain. Local crafts and the arts flourish. Or fly directly from Fez to Marrakech.
Churchill went to Marrakech to take the cure (bronchitis). We follow in his footsteps, significantly healthier, we hope. The ancient Berber capital is a busy marketplace, and no wonder—it straddles a number of well-worn trade routes. Life
revolves around Djemaa el Fna, the central square with the ambience of a three-ring circus, snake charmers and all. Tombs, mosques, and museums take up our time when we’re not entranced with people-watching on the busy and colorful square.
We work our way over to Koutoubia Mosque, which dominates the skyline. The Saadian royal family is buried within. There is also time to tour a king's palace and a museum of the arts. Stay at one of three magnificent hotels: the Villa des Orangers, La Maison Arabe, or La Mamounia (the last at a supplemental charge).
From Marrakech, take a half-day trip beyond the city limits to the Ourika Valley for a close examination of Berber life as it once was—and continues to be. Change comes slowly to the Atlas range.
Then fly home, or—if you want more of Morocco (and who could blame you?)—add just a bit more time to your journey in Morocco with visits to Rabat and Casablanca with our One Imperial City, One Incredible Port. Casablanca is modern, Atlantic, and deeply influenced by the French. Rabat, a short drive away, allows us to get to
know the national heroes and other important players on the Morocco stage. The archaeological museum speaks volumes about the nation’s long past (and about Morocco’s pride of place).Your R. Crusoe tour specialist can explain exactly how this extension fits into the main tour.
Finally, we suggest you head for Essaouira at the end of your main tour, for time on the Atlantic coast. The town's history heated up in the 1700s, when Portugal called it Mogodor. But Essaouira's origins stretch all the way back to the fifth century B.C. Don't miss it.
These are two-day and three-day sample extensions. Remember that R. Crusoe can create Morocco extensions of any length to meet your exact specifications.
