Following in the wake of 18th- and 19th-century explorers and prosperous merchant ships, we undertake a cruise that encompasses West Africa's most resplendent cities and historic coastline. As we trace the Atlantic from Morocco to Ghana, encounter cities, towns, and islands not often visited by foreign travelers. Ancient cultures, tribal customs, wild animals, magnificent markets, and medinas await.

From the Imperial Cities to the Gold & Ivory Coasts. Exploring West Africa. 20 Days.

We gather in cosmopolitan Casablanca, Morocco, to embark our cruise ship, the Corinthian II. A small vessel that's part of the fleet operated by Travel Dynamics International, she accommodates just 114 guests (max) in 57 delightful suites. Each suite affords outside views and is appointed with a sitting room, a private bathroom, and more.

In Marrakech, the action—day and night—centers around Djemaa el-Fna, the city’s main square. To the capital city of Rabat, fabled Marrakech, authentic Agadir, and the imperial walled city of Taroudant, with an alternative option to scenic Imouzzer des Ida Oudatane, high in the Atlas Mountains.

Dip into Spain’s Canary Islands via Lanzarote, with time in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Timanfaya.

Back to Africa. In Morocco, we dock in El Marsa and head off to Laayoune in the Western Sahara. Continue to the whitewashed town of Dakhla before leaving Morocco behind.

Senegal. Life at a distinctly different pace. The IFAN Museum in Dakar, Senegal, is the place to go for a close examination of African culture and fine arts.

Banjul, The Gambia, was founded by the Brits in the 19th century. From here, penetrate exotic Abuko Nature Reserve in search of monkeys, and enter Makasutu Culture Forest for a look at exquisite woodland scenery.

Freetown, Sierra Leone, is one of West Africa’s most stunning spots. Think white-sand beaches, lush scenery, interesting museums, a lovely old cathedral, and more.

Monrovia, Liberia, was named for U.S. President James Monroe. Find out why...

Into Ghana, next. Takoradi is our gateway to Kakum National Park, where the rain forest supports a menagerie—elephant, monkeys, antelopes, and more bird species than you can count. Back in town, get to know the Castle Coast on an excursion to two exceptional fortresses that Europeans left behind centuries ago. The port of Tema is our entry into Accra, one of Africa’s liveliest capitals. Its unusual markets brim with the handwork of regional artisans.

From Accra, fly home, or join us for a nine-day Post-Cruise Extension to Mali to see the nation’s highlights—Bamako, Djenné, the Dogon Region, and, of course, Timbuktu, the end of the Earth.
