Back to Guilin: Unlike much of China, which is in transition, Guilin is a serene place, a place beloved by many of China's most prolific and respected poets and artists. The region around Guilin also provides startling proof that traditional Chinese painting is not stylized. Those surreal shapes and depthless forms are, in fact, portraits of a landscape that meanders along the banks of the Li River. See for yourself how nature can outdo art. Tradition unfolds in quiet villages like Liu Gong. Farmers cultivate rice in Longshen County's gorgeous jigsaw of terraces, just as they have for generations.
We also attend a performance of a fantastic cultural show staged by none other than Zhang Zimou, who was responsible for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Biejing Olympics.
