Somewhere in our past loom the figures—larger than life—who mark the moments when history took a turn. Without them, who would we be? Homer. Pericles. Agamemnon. The Byzantines, the Crusaders, the Venetians, the Ottomans.
Here's a chance for you and the kids to reach back in time to those larger-than-life personalities still at home in ancient Italy, Greece, and Turkey.
Voyage to the Lands of Gods & Heroes. A Family Journey to Italy, Greece, & Turkey. 12 Days.
R. Crusoe & Son travels to Italy, Greece, and Turkey on a magnificent, family-oriented 12-day journey. Our transport? The all-suite, 114-passenger Corinthian II, a ship operated by our partner, Travel Dynamics International. Along the way, we surround ourselves with the remnants of peoples that shaped Western civilization. First-rate lecturers and knowledgeable youth education counselors accompany us.
On these family departures, experienced youth education counselors lead groups of similarly aged children and young adults in the "Young Explorers Program," a series of educational and recreational activities designed from a child’s perspective. This is the perfect opportunity to inspire young minds with the poetry of
Homer, the legends of The Iliad and The Odyssey, the ideas of Socrates, and real-life examples of great architecture.
Children take guided shore excursions specifically created to bring to life legend and history. Or, flexibility being the key, enjoy independent time to relax or explore together as a family. In addition, while adults attend lectures or enjoy free time, Young Explorers—children between the ages of seven and 18—may participate in the following activities:
- Participate in mock archaeological excavation.
- Discover how ancient sailors navigated by the stars.
- Visit the ship’s bridge, and keep a log of the journey.
- Learn on-site about heroes of Greek mythology.
- Produce a play in the ancient Greek style for presentation at the end of the cruise.
- Participate in a treasure hunt with an ancient culture theme.
Please note: The Young Explorers program is available to children ages seven to 18. Younger children are not able to participate in these programs and must be supervised by onboard parents or guardians at all times during the journey.
Also accompanying us are study leaders, specialists in related fields that impart their knowledge and shares their experiences with us as we go.
Here's a glance at our itinerary: Civitavecchia, Italy, the port of Rome, is our embarkation point.
After a look at the imperial city, we’re off to Pompeii or Amalfi and Ravello—your choice.
Olympia, Greece, next, to see where the games began.
Knossos, Crete, was home to the Minoan people. An alternative for those who’ve been there? Hike the scenic Imbros Gorge, also on Crete. Then the delightful island of Santorini, another Minoan outpost.
The island of Rhodes beckons, too, known for its ancient thinkers and its medieval town of Lindos.
Dock in the port of Kusadasi, Turkey, next, and head for Ephesus, perhaps the Mediterranean’s greatest ancient site.
Disembark the Corinthian II in Piraeus, the port of Athens, and explore the Acropolis before spending the night in town. Then back home, with a whole new (old) world open to you and yours.
