Roman emperors who conquered much of Europe found the ancestors of the Scottish people too fiercely independent to be subdued. Today, in this land of rugged beauty, wind-swept mountains, and deep green valleys, ancient abbeys and remarkable castles bring to mind legends of heroism and honor. It's time to get to know Scotland.
Scotland: From the Border Country to the Highlands & Beyond. One (Very) Grand Tour.
10 Days.
You, your beloved, and your favorite traveling couple get cozy in the city of Edinburgh—elegant, refined, every street replete with history. See why Sir Walter Scott fell madly in love with this old town.
A drive takes us beyond Edinburgh for a day trip to Kelso, in the Scottish Borders. Enjoy a VIP visit to the Duke of Roxburghe’s Floors Castle. An exquisite property, indeed, and the largest inhabited castle in all of Scotland. Nearby Melrose boasts a 900-year-old Cistercian abbey, and Peeblesshire has its Traquair House, nearly as old and inhabited by the same family since the late 1400s.
Bid farewell to Edinburgh as we drive to Hopetoun, on the Firth of Forth. See a wonderful example of the work of architects William Bruce and William Adam. In Perth, step inside Scone Palace, which holds a special place in the hearts of the Scottish people. Then Glamis and its eponymous castle, beloved birthplace of the late Queen Mother.
In Blair Atholl, Blair Castle, a graceful turreted affair, has seen more than its share of history. Likewise Culloden, where a decisive battle in 1746 pitted the French-backed Jacobites against the British government.
Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland sits on gorgeous parkland reminiscent of Versailles.
Get an eyeful before we cruise Loch Ness in search of You-Know-Who (the scenery is pretty breathtaking, too).
After a bit of time in Fort William, we’re off to Loch Awe (can you think of a more intriguing name?) and then Inveraray, whose castle houses a fine collection of arms and French tapestries.
Thirteen pretty islets dot the waters of Loch Lomond, and craggy peaks surround its shores. Have a good look before alighting in sophisticated Glasgow, the nation’s largest city. Then home, knowing Scotland.
Have a look at our other suggested destinations for two-couple travel: Tuscany & Umbria; Burgundy; Normandy; Russia.
