When Czar Peter the Great returned from his grans Tour of Europe at the end of the 17th century, he had stars in his eyes. They would twinkle brightly as he ordered the creation of Russian's version of a Western European city.
It would be a paean in stone to all that he saw-and admired-on the Continent. The new city, St. Petersburg (modesty wasn't part of the equation, after all), would replace Moscow as his empire's capital at least for a while.
To Russia with Love. Beyond the Onion Domes.
9 Days.
You and your companion couple experience two quite different, but equally remarkable, Russian cities—St. Petersburg and Moscow—and their environs.
To Moscow first. This is the pulse of Russia, her economic, financial, and intellectual heart. Red Square is the center of it all. Be wowed by the Kremlin and St. Basil’s. Hear tales of the women sent off to Novodevichy Convent. In nearby Sergiev Posad, see one of Russia’s most significant monasteries, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Then on to St. Petersburg, one of the world’s great living museums. Peter and Paul Fortress became one of Russia’s more notorious prisons.
St. Isaac’s Cathedral leaves us awestruck, as does Catherine the Great’s Hermitage. Yusupov Palace was the backdrop for Rasputin’s complicated murder. Czar Alexander II, on the other hand, was cut down swiftly at the spot now marked by the Church of the Spilt Blood. On a day trip to Pushkin and Pavlovsk, see the stuff of classical Russian novels.
If you’ve got a bit of extra time, consider our extensions to Novgorod, founded in the fifth century, and Vladimir and Suzdal, two villages that are part of the Golden Ring. There’s plenty of medieval history that shouldn’t be missed. Another possibility? Extend your visit to Ukraine—Kiev, Yalta, and beyond—for a close look at the very roots of today’s Russia.
