Local Flavor
On the shore of Table Bay, historic Cape Town, South Africa, owes its existence to the Dutch East India Company, which established it as a supply station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and Far East. In 1952, it became the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. The discovery of diamonds in 1869 and gold rush in 1886 prompted a flood of immigrants, who added much to the flavor of the city. A great year-round climate, a gorgeous natural setting, and plenty to do and see make Cape Town a stellar destination for the savvy traveler. Don't miss it.
Utterly Civilized Cape Town Extension.
This is a four-day sample extension. Remember that R. Crusoe can create a Cape Town journey of any length to meet your exact specifications.
Begin your trip to Cape Town by checking in to the five-star-plus Mount Nelson Hotel (known locally as the Nellie), a landmark beauty surrounded by acres of lush gardens at the foot of Table Mountain. Take a guided tour of the city—Adderley Street, St. George’s Cathedral, the Company Gardens. Ride a cable car up Table Mountain, where the views are unparalleled, as you can imagine. There’s Tamboerskloof and the Malay Quarter, the bay and Milnerton Lighthouse.
Beyond the city limits, next. Your choice: Head for the Cape Peninsula or the Cape Wine Country.
The peninsula, a thin finger of land that forms the southwestern corner of the continent, is filled with history and natural wonders. Drop by the charming harbor town of Hout Bay for a taste of the oceanside social life. Chapman’s Peak Drive is stunning, hewn as it is into the side of the mountain. Cape Point boasts a nature reserve, Simon’s Town a bit of merry old England.
If wine is your thing, head directly for the Cape Wine Country, where a Dutchman planted the first vines in 1655. South Africa’s wine industry today is a mishmash of top French, German, and Italian oenological traditions, with a touch of the new—California and Australia—thrown into the mix. Our tour takes us to Franschhoek, a chic wine-centered town bursting with cafés, bistros, boutiques, and excellent estates that bottle renowned wines. Then to Stellenbosch, a well-preserved colonial town and the very center of South Africa’s wine industry.
Back to the city for your flight home. Reality calls.
