Local Flavor
The great Pyramids at Giza, built before the wheel had been invented. The avenue of the sphinxes at the Temple at Luxor. The Cairo church where Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus paused to rest after fleeing from King Herod. Each stop on our Egyptian journey opens a new door.
If you want more time in the region, we suggest an extension to neighboring Jordan, holy land in the heart of the desert. The history here is worth your while, we promise. There's the 5,000-year-old King's Highway. An ancient city of mosaics. And much, much more. The Nabataeans founded the mysterious, hidden city of Petra, a magical spot the Romans fell in love with centuries later. Don't miss it.
Cairo, Giza, & the Nile. Luxe at a Leisurely Pace. Aboard the Zahra.
This is a 14-day sample itinerary. Remember that R. Crusoe can create an Egypt journey of any length to meet your exact specifications.
“What do you see?”
“Wonderful things.”
—Conversation between Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, upon Carter’s opening Tutankhamen’s tomb, 26 November 1922, 4 p.m.
Don’t miss these “wonderful things.” Even 80-odd years later, Tut’s stuff continues to amaze. R. Crusoe & Son offers two outstanding tours to Egypt. And, of course, any of our itineraries can be customized to fit your schedule, your small group, your needs, your particular interests.
A (very) fortunate few of us have ample time to travel, sans BlackBerries, briefcases, and homework. If you happen to be one of the lucky few, consider taking on Egypt on this, our Egypt journey taken at a leisurely pace. Our vessel is the Zahra, a new cruise ship on the Nile operated by the exceptional Oberoi hotel group. This is the only Nile cruiser outfitted with its own onboard full-service spa. It doesn’t get much better than this.
Begin in Cairo (the Four Seasons is home sweet home). There is time at the Egyptian Museum, old Coptic Cairo, old Islamic Cairo. And experience Giza (the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx), ancient Memphis, and Sakkara.
Then jet to Luxor and embark the Zahra. As in our shorter Egypt journey, take time in the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, and more. Visit the University of Chicago's Chicago House, if you are here during the months it is open (Chicago House closes May through mid-October every year.)
Cruise on to Qena. Here a unique opportunity awaits: enjoy a cocktail reception at the ancient Temple of Dendera. We return to Luxor for a bit more time—including an opportunity to poke around an ancient workmen’s village.
Farther along the Nile to Edfu, Aswan (home of the High Dam), Agilika Island and its graceful Philae Temple, Kom Ombo, and Kitchener’s Island. Take in astonishing sites at Abu Simbel and enjoy an unusual cocktail reception on Mango Island.
Fly back to Cairo. From here, we hope you’ll extend your tour with some time in fascinating other Middle East destinations: Jordan, Israel, United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon.
Please note: On this journey, R. Crusoe & Son partners with Oberoi, and Crusoe travelers share the Zahra with other, non-Crusoe travelers.
