Local Flavor
By the fourth century B.C., the Greeks had settled on the Black Sea shores "like frogs around a pond," as Plato so poetically put it. They had left the Aegean coast behind in search of new turf to colonize. We propose a journey around the history-laden Black Sea—not to conquer, but to learn.
2 Black Sea Cruises Aboard the Seabourn Odyssey. 2010 & 2011. 8 or 15 Days.
Ready for an unusual cruise around Eastern Europe?
On our luxury ship, the 450-passenger, all-suite Seabourn Odyssey, come discover the Black Sea and beyond with R. Crusoe & Son. There is plentiful history on these shores. Explore Turkey, Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, and Ukraine with experts and local guides to get a handle on this culturally rich part of the world.
Both of the departures, incidentally, end in Istanbul. We suggest you take a few extra days there to get to know this incredible and unique city.
Among the possible ports of call and sites we visit:
Turkey:
Canakkale, our gateway to ancient Troy. Ephesus, among the best preserved Roman ruins in the region. Istanbul, where Asia meets Europe. Kusadasi, our entry point into Ephesus.
Romania:
Constanta, a 2,500-year-old city, figures in the mythology of Jason and the Argonauts.
Greece:
Mykonos, one of the most charming of the Cyclades. In 1704, monks completed a monastery in Skiathos that would later play a role in the war of independence. Piraeus is the port city of Athens.
Bulgaria:
Nesebar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and with good reason. Varna boasts 2,500-year-old ruins, Roman baths, and a fourth-century basilica.
Ukraine:
Odessa, where we walk in the footsteps of Tatars, Lithuanians, Ottomans, Catherine the Great, and the Soviets. See Eisenstein's 1925 classic, "Battleship Potemkin," before coming here. Sevastopol is the former home of the Russian Black Fleet. Today things have changed quite a bit. F.D.R., Churchill, and Stalin met in Yalta to divvy up Europe. Sixty-five years later, it's our turn to visit.
