Local Flavor

Czar Peter the Great built his namesake Russian capital within shouting distance of the Baltic Sea. This was no coincidence. He was quite clear on the Baltic's strategic importance. It provided fish for dinner, amber for trade. And most important, it gave Russia access to the North Sea and the Black Sea. Which is to say, the whole wide world.

Come see what's here on one of two exceptional small vessels: the Seabourn Sojourn, a wonderful all-suite cruise ship; or the Sea Cloud II, for those who prefer travel aboard a classic windjammer.

10 Baltic Sea Cruises Aboard the Sea Cloud II & the Seabourn Sojourn. 2010 & 2011.

Ready for a vacation, one that cruises though Northern Europe?

Two elegant ships, the luxurious new 450-passenger, all-suite Seabourn Sojourn and the 94-passenger windjammer Sea Cloud II, cruise the Baltic Sea and beyond with R. Crusoe & Son. We take in the top sights in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Estonia, and Poland as well as in Germany and in Amsterdam. Experts and the best local guides get us acquainted with this part of Northern Europe.

Among the possible ports of call and sites we visit:

Norway:
Alesund, known for its splendid concentration of Jugenstil (art nouveau) architecture. Bergen, on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It dates from the 11th century. Olden, adopted home of American painter and millionaire Willam Singer. Experience the mountainous scenery of Molde, in the Aland Islands. Stavanger's 12th-century cathedral we adore. Flaam is Fjord Central, with some of the best scenery around. Don't forget your camera.

Denmark:
Vikings got things started in Copenhagen. Today, it's ranked one of the most livable cities on Earth. Skagen exemplifies picturesque rural Denmark, from its low-slung yellow houses to its expanse of  beaches. Bornholm's strategic location has meant a constant flow of conquerors over the centuries.

Sweden:
Stockholm, royal capital and a lovely mix of the traditional and the 21st-century. Visby is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its authentic old Hanseatic town.

Finland:
Helsinki's old buildings mimic those in St. Petersburg, and no wonder—its architecture was based on that of the czar's own hometown. Mariehamn, popular seaside resort in the Aland Islands.

Russia:
St. Petersburg, Czar Peter the Great's astonishing vision in stone and brick.

Estonia:

Have an adventure in Tallinn, a medieval gem despite having been numerously sacked, pillaged, and bombed over the centuries.

Poland:
Gdansk, once a Hanseatic League powerhouse. We love its 17th-century feel. Szcezecin's streets resemble those in Paris, which is easy to understand once you know that Haussmann designed them.

Germany:
Lübeck, former capital of the Hanseatic League. UNESCO has added it to the World Heritage list. Kiel is among Germany's top maritime centers. Kiel Week is the world's largest annual sailing event, and it all takes place here. Hamburg's busy streets and port compete with delightful gardens scattered throughout town. Warnemünde, once a shy fishing village, is now a beloved seaside resort. So is Travemünde, though it is also Germany's largest ferry port on the Baltic.

Netherlands:
Amsterdam, the nation's cultural, financial, and commercial heart, with something for everyone who visits.
