f hese are times to consider what’s right here in our own backyard. To wit: those great Great Lakes–Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior. Knowing that they form what is essentially a vast inland sea right here in the continental U.S. of A., isn’t it time you took a closer look?

Aboard the charming Clelia II, an all-suite, 100-guest ship, cruise from Toronto into Lake Ontario. The Welland Canal is like a liquid staircase, taking us from one altitude to another and into Lake Erie. Ever seen Niagara Falls (besides on your honeymoon—lo’ those many years ago—when you were a bit distracted)? Here’s your chance.

Then Lake Huron and its Manituolin Island, home of the Wikwemikong Indians, to whom we pay a visit on their reservation.

Mackinac (pronounce it Mack-in-awe, please) Island is our gateway into Lake Michigan and our time machine back to the Victorian age. No cars, no fumes, no noise on this little piece of paradise. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was once the hub of copper mining. No more, but history has left its mark.

Back into Canada and Thunder Bay, a French fur-trading center back in the 1600s and later, home to the British Old Fort William.

Disembark in Duluth, Minnesota, a wiser, worldlier American.
