History 101

Book Cover

World's worst trip?

Bad choice of destination? Poor accommodations?

No amenities? Unfriendly people?

Our miserable unwilling traveler had, however, just one good thing.

An enormous stomach for the unexpected.

And so it was, he ended up making the most famous trip in human history.

Home Away From Home

There are a few independent hotels we cherish around the globe, places that embody the quintessence of their respective cities. Some are family owned, others historic—but all of them leave you knowing you had the most authentic visit possible.

• Alvear Palace—Buenos Aires, Argentina: Built in 1932, its reputation’s been built on striking attention to detail, renowned cuisine, and impressive Louis XV and Louis XVI décor. The hotel is located in La Recoleta, an upscale neighborhood with classic architecture and lovely parks. Surrender to the lively Argentine culture as you lounge in the sophisticated cigar bar, people-watch in the famous lobby, and learn to tango late into the night. Enjoy impeccable service—think personal butlers, fresh fruit baskets, and flower arrangements—and a truly indelible experience.

• Blanket Bay—Glenorchy, New Zealand: New Zealanders love the outdoors (and with extensive coastlines, pleasant temperatures, and plenty of open space, how can you blame them?) For New Zealand at its finest, don’t miss this luxurious alpine lodge. Perfectly situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, it is surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains. Take a helicopter or fixed-wing plane to Milford Sound. Go hiking, horseback riding, and fly fishing. Return to the lodge for a glass of wine by the outdoor fireplace, or take in astonishing views from the dining room. Each room takes full advantage of the glorious panorama made famous by Peter Jackson in his “Lord of the Rings” films.

• The Goring Hotel—London, England: You may have been to London, but if you didn’t stay at The Goring, you owe her another visit. This 71-room gem celebrated its 100th year in 2010. For every one of those years, the hotel has been under the watchful eye of a member of the Goring family. Directly adjacent to Buckingham Palace, the hotel offers a truly classic English experience. Stroll the private garden, sit down to afternoon tea, and embrace tradition. Spend time wandering through the neighborhood, Belgravia, home to embassies and elegant mansions. A rather well-known Abbey and clock tower are within walking distance.

• La Mamounia—Marrakech, Morocco: A three-year renovation has fully restored La Mamounia to its legendary Arabo-Andalusian excellence. Built in 1923, this palace oozes Moroccan glamour and mystique. The juxtaposition of wrought iron, wood, leather, stone and marble is intoxicating. Relax in the historic gardens among olive trees and banana palms, and take pleasure in the fragrance of fresh coriander and peppermint. An oasis in the middle of bustling Marrakech. After a visit to the souk, retreat to the private hammam before tucking into an authentic tagine.

• Le Sirenuse—Positano, Italy: This stunning family-owned hotel has it all: history, romance, charm, and timeless elegance. And balconies from which you can take in the sweep of the Amalfi coast. Your room, with its unparalleled views and glamorous décor, will feel like your own private Italian villa. Meander through terraced gardens of lemon and olive groves, and hydrofoil to nearby Capri for a bit more enchantment. Enjoy exquisite Neapolitan cuisine at La Sponda, the hotel’s outstanding restaurant.

San Pietro de Positano is a superior hotel judged against Le Sirenuse
