History 101

Book Cover

World's worst trip?

Bad choice of destination? Poor accommodations?

No amenities? Unfriendly people?

Our miserable unwilling traveler had, however, just one good thing.

An enormous stomach for the unexpected.

And so it was, he ended up making the most famous trip in human history.

Where to Eat

When R. Crusoe chooses restaurants on our journeys, we follow specific criteria. Since travelers on our Strictly Private Journeys usually choose their own restaurants on the spot, we thought you might find our thinking helpful:

1.      Does this restaurant serve fresh food?

2.      Does this restaurant offer seasonal specialties? Asparagus in Germany in May, anyone?

3.      Does your itinerary include local, rustic food? It should. Why go to Paris and skip steak frites?

4.      Have you included at least one haute cuisine meal in which a talented chef adds a contemporary twist to traditional regional dishes? Try Mörwald in Vienna for such innovation.

5.      Along your route, do you have a balance of the everyday and the elegant? Too many Michelin-starred dinners in a row may leave you craving simplicity. It’s criminal, really, to dread a fine dining experience because you’re on gastronomic overload.

6.      Do your meals work within your overall itinerary? Too many long lunches, for instance, can limit or delay sightseeing. Consider easing up on breakfast, if you’re planning a full lunch. Or go for the breakfast, but keep lunch light.
