ntarctica is bathed in white light and shades of blues and violets. Its ice fields are punctuated with penguin rookeries, its soundtrack
performed by whales and seals and all manner of seabirds.
Don't miss this otherworldly place. Get down there fast.
R. Crusoe offers a journey to the bottom of the earth and beyond—to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands—aboard the 100-passenger
Clelia II, a ship ideally suited for exploring Antarctica (you wouldn’t want to visit on anything but).
A fleet of Zodiacs allows us to land in shallow water and navigate small waterways. Naturalists accompany us on the ship and in the Zodiacs to
keep us informed on all we’re seeing.
Begin
and end in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From Ushuaia (Argentina),
the very tip of civilization, continue to the Falkland Islands,
home to rich marine life, five species of penguin, seals, and
the occassional Brit. Spend time in the captial of Port Stanley,
and get a close look at the resident wildlife.
Land in South Georgia, an archipelago once ravaged by the South
Atlantic whaling industry and now strictly protected. Keep an
eye out for elephant seals, fur seals, king penguins, albatrosses
of many sorts, and a variety of hooded and mantled sooties.
We also visit the town of Grytviken, where Sir Ernest Shackleton
is buried.
Traverse
the Scotia Sea, now, land in the South Orkneys. Call at Coronation
Island to visit scientists posted at Britain’s Signy Station.
Meet the neighbors—penguins and petrels too numerous to count.
Finally, the Antarctic for a comprehensive exploration of the
peninsula. Glaciers calf new icebergs. Fin whales frolic in
our wake. Rookeries of penguins invite us over for a little
socializing. Research stations along the way open their doors
to us, and scientists living here share their experiences. The
extraordinary silence is deafening, the space liberating.
Cruise back to Buenos Aires and fly home, knowing
Mother Earth a bit better.

The Works: Antarctica, South Georgia, & the Falklands. 21 Days.
