History 101

World's worst trip?

Bad choice of destination? Poor accommodations?

No amenities? Unfriendly people?

Our miserable unwilling traveler had, however, just one good thing.

An enormous stomach for the unexpected.

And so it was, he ended up making the most famous trip in human history.

Thanksgiving in Peru.

Joan and John Provost, seasoned travelers, wanted to see Machu Picchu. As John’s birthday rolled around early last November, the couple decided to postpone the celebration a few weeks and join R. Crusoe & Son for a Thanksgiving journey to Machu Picchu and Peru’s Sacred Valley.

They hadn’t traveled with us before, but Joan was particularly taken with our travel journal. “It talks to those of us interested in history,” she says. “What I wanted was personalized attention as well as the historic perspective. I had to be sure I had a clear understanding of the culture as we went.”

R. Crusoe came through in spades. Says Joan, “With R. Crusoe, you feel as if they’ve sculpted the trip just for you and your mate. I never felt we were part of a big group being herded around.

“Our tour escort was the most delightful person... absolutely forthcoming and candid about Peruvian culture. He even played the Peruvian flute for us when we got to the top of Machu Picchu.”

But there was a twist: While in Peru, John became ill. For about 24 hours, he was terribly under the weather. “That’s why I love R. Crusoe. He was so sick, that even keeping him quiet was extremely difficult,” remembers Joan. “Due to the unbelievable services of R. Crusoe, we were able to continue our journey and rejoin the group once John’s condition improved. Crusoe’s people in the Sacred Valley did whatever they could to help, including finding a doctor and sending a special van to get us where we needed to go. They couldn’t have tried harder.”
